Why NN Occupational Health?

What’s included

Drug testing is typically conducted via a urine sample, however in some cases a saliva sample can be used. Both tests are instant, producing results within a few minutes following collection.

A urine screen is the recommended approach for pre-employment testing.

This is because a urine sample generally screens over a longer period, usually around 2 weeks prior to testing.

An oral fluid (or saliva) screen will typically only detect substances used in the 24 hours before taking the test.

Urine screens can provide a more general idea of typical behaviour, whereas saliva screens are more specific to “at the time” testing. This makes saliva screens much more suited for workplace incidents for people who are already employed, where identifying if a worker was under the influence at a specific time e.g. during work hours / at the time of an incident is important. Saliva testing can also be more appropriate for random tests at the workplace, as they are less likely to detect substance use outside of work. Saliva testing is more reliable as a means of detecting if someone is currently under the influence, and hence may more effectively be used to reduce risk of workplace injury.

Frequently asked questions

Drug and alcohol impairment is a major factor in many WHS post accident investigations, as well as being an issue regarding workplace culture when trying to build a strong and effective workforce.

Many employers underestimate the use of drugs in their target employee group, and screening for substance use at a pre employment is an effective method of avoiding potential future issues as well as providing some peace of mind that a negative test has been documented at the time of commencing employment.

This will depend on your policy and procedure documentation, which NNOH can assist with. High risk industries, such as those involving machine operation or high powered tool use would be recommended to have stricter and more frequent testing to minimise risk of injury or incidents, given the potential severity of accidents.
